Volunteering under the direction of Morehead Trail Town Inc. is rewarding, fun and engaging.
In July 2014, Morehead became a certified Kentucky Trail Town. As part of that certification, Morehead Trail Town Inc. was formed creating an umbrella organization for all things 'trails'. The organization was tasked with trail maintenance, promotion and preserving the outdoors for future generations.
Maintaining existing trails. This work includes weed-eating, tree removal, brush removal, branch removal, leaf blowing, repair damage etc. Additional maintenance will include install/maintain trail signs and maintain trailhead structures. Please keep in mind, trail maintenance is a strenuous activity that often requires you to walk several miles while carrying maintenance tools. We strongly encourage you to wear the proper clothing (long pants, hiking boots, long sleeves/jackets (depending on weather) and hats/head coverings to block the sun's rays. Bring water, snacks and if you prefer to use walking sticks for the trek in, please bring along. There are often no two jobs the same but we will prepare you in advance as we announce scheduled maintenance days.
In early 2023, Morehead Trail Town Inc. officially partnered with the United States Forest Service's Cumberland Ranger District to develop a volunteer agreement. As part of this agreement, our organization is now an authorized trail maintaining group with the Daniel Boone National Forest. This expands our reach and allows us to work in collaboration with the USFS teams on various trail-related projects and general maintenance efforts.
There are important rules to follow to protect our interests as well as the USFS interests but in the end, we all get to enjoy the land that is known as "The Boone".
Each trail maintenance activity will have a leader that will conduct 'tailgate training'. This training is required to make sure your experience maintaining trails within the Daniel Boone National Forest is a safe one.
Volunteer reporting is the last piece of our puzzle. As part of the 'tailgate training', the maintenance leader will collect information from volunteers to complete the USFS 301b form. Click here for a sample.
