Morehead Turtle Walk

Where History, Heritage & Nature Meet

The Turtle Walk celebrates the rich heritage of the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail and Morehead's unique place along it. The name Sheltowee, meaning "Big Turtle," was given to Daniel Boone by Shawnee Chief Blackfish after Boone was adopted into the tribe in 1778. Today, the turtle serves as the iconic symbol of the Sheltowee Trace, representing strength, resilience, and exploration. In 2014, Morehead became Kentucky's third certified Trail Town and remains the only city in the state with a National Recreation Trail running directly down its Main Street. Inspired by this connection, the community created the Turtle Walk, featuring uniquely painted turtle sculptures designed by local and regional artists to celebrate the area's history, culture, and creativity.

  • The Sheltowee Connection – "Sheltowee" was the name given to Daniel Boone by the Shawnee, meaning Big Turtle. The Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail, which passes through Rowan County, carries that name today.
  • Daniel Boone – Boone explored and hunted throughout eastern Kentucky, including the region surrounding present-day Morehead and Cave Run.
  • Native American Heritage – The turtle has deep significance in many Native American cultures, symbolizing wisdom, endurance, creation, and connection to the land.
  • Conservation – The Turtle Walk encourages visitors to slow down, observe nature, and appreciate the forests, streams, town and wildlife that make Morehead a Trail Town.
  • Community Collaboration –  The Turtle Walk showcases the creativity and generosity of the Morehead community. Local businesses, organizations, and individuals sponsored each turtle, while local and regional artists transformed them into one-of-a-kind works of art. Together, they create a vibrant public art experience that celebrates Morehead's connection to the Sheltowee Trace and encourages visitors to explore downtown and beyond.
